SMS means...... @19.30 - 03/11/2023.

SMS means… is art that excites and dazzles. It is a series of multidisciplinary events that invite you to explore different art forms and marginalised perspectives. At the Château Rouge art space, artists, performers and musicians from diverse backgrounds come together to create works that respond to and transform each other. In this way, we channel synergies and cross-genre projects. SMS creates space for diversity, dialogue and collaboration that fosters a dynamic of inclusion.

Our Guests

Lia Kohl and Katinka Kleijn

Katinka Kleijn and Lia Kohl’s shared practice explores vulnerability and resilience through the cello as an object, a body, and a sound-making tool. Both cellists, composers, and sound artists, Kohl and Kleijn work in duo improvisation and multidisciplinary art with regular as well as broken cellos in order to explore unusual, counterintuitive, and even iconoclastic ways of working with the instrument. As artists who are not only technicians of the cello but its companions and collaborators, their exploration is deeply personal, where the body of the cello is a corollary to their own. As such a site of empathy, the cello allows for unique experimentation with the limits of both tenderness and violence.

Kohl & Kleijn have presented work at the New Orleans/Chicago based Instigation Festival, City of Chicago’s ‘Nights Out in the Park’ Series, Catalytic Sound Festival, Yucca Valley Material Lab, the Chicago Cultural Center, and exhibited at the Chicago Design Museum.

Cellist Katinka Kleijn is a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the In- ternational Contemporary Ensemble. Active in improvisation, composition, sound sculpture and multidisciplinary art, she is a Drag City recording artist.

Lia Kohl is a cellist, composer, and sound artist based in Chicago. Her wide-ranging practice includes solo composition and performance, installation, improvisation, and collaboration. She tours nationally and internationally, working in theater, jazz, rock, and experimental contexts. Her work centers curiosity and patience, an exploration of the mundane and profound possibilities of sound.

Aaron Nora Scherer (they/them) likes to challenge societal norms and conventions. They work with a strong focus on play, healing, pleasure, humour, intimacy, sexuality and the relationship between humans and nature. While mostly collaborating with other artists they express themselves through performance, video, installation and sound. Apart from that they are an activist, social- and bodyworker, sex educator and facilitator of workshops.

Their work „soil2foil3“ was shot during the second run of a weeklong self-organized residency in Metnitztal, Austria in 2023 together with six artist friends.
It shows 3 bodies wrapped in cling foil in an old barn next to the mountain hut of the Wurzer family that was built in 1780.
The video plays with an uncanny almost horror like aesthetic through the alienation of the three bodies that look weirdly superficial and misplaced in the surrounding of the barn. In addition to the video work Aaron will carefully turn the body of an audience member into a cling foil mummy.
